As stated before me, the ruler of Egypt was almost always chosen within the royal family. If a woman was next in line--take Cleopatra, for example--she might marry her older or younger brother for the sake of politics. Men were obviously more favored, but an Ancient Egyptian ruler was a woman, she was not allowed to marry outside her family...therefore, putting an end to her family's bloodline and establishing another (of the man's origins).
